St. Christopher is one of the most popular saints and is known as the patron saint of travelers, in particular soldiers and sailors. Many of us will hang a St. Christopher’s medal in our car to bring us safely on our every day journeys.
This hand crafted pendant depicts the image of St. Christopher carrying a child over a river. The story of St. Christopher goes as follows…
Born circa 350AD in Lycia (now part of Turkey) legend tells us that Christopher was over 7 feet tall and very strong. He was a Canaanite which was a member of a biblical tribe. Christopher’s job became helping people to cross a large and treacherous river. It was notoriously dangerous to cross however Christopher’s size and strength made all the difference.
One day a child asked to be carried across and Christopher agreed immediately. However, as he waded across the water began to rise higher and higher. It became a real struggle and by the time he reached the other side he was totally exhausted. Putting the child down safely he said, “ I felt like I had the weight of the world on my shoulders”. The child then told him that he was in fact the Son of God and that Christopher had indeed carried mankind from one side to the other safely.
Today it is well known for travelers to wear a St. Christopher necklace as he has become synonymous with safe journeys, strength of purpose and determination.
