Our striking British penny necklace features a classic bronze pence coin originally minted during the late Victorian Age. One side of the coin features a crowned bust of Queen Victoria wearing a widow’s veil in memory of her beloved Prince Albert. The reverse showcases the striking figure of Britannia – the female personification of Great Britain herocially regimented in a Corinthian helmet, flowing robes, a shield bearing the Union Jack and a trident.
This penny coin dates from the latter days of Queen Victoria’s reign. Their dates will vary but will come from the period 1890 – 1901. The coins are made from bronze and were in everyday circulation. There were 12 pennies in a shilling and 20 shillings in a pound!
During this Victorian Era the British empire was at the height of power and many ambitious building projects began. There was huge demand for the finest of marbles to adorn fine buildings and the use of Ireland’s rare Connemara Marble is featured in may examples of Victorian architecture.
The marble was so famous that in the later years of Queen Victoria’s reign King Edward VII made a visit to our Marble quarry in Co. Galway during his state visit to Ireland in 1903. We dont have any Connemara Marble in this pendant as it is set within sterling silver with rose gold plating and presented on an 18″ chain with a 2″ extender.
