This penny coin dates from the latter days of Queen Victoria’s reign. Their dates will vary but will come from the period 1890 – 1901. The coins are made from bronze and were in everyday circulation. There were 12 pennies in a shilling and 20 shillings in a pound!
The coin features the bust of Queen Victoria wearing her widows veil in memory of her beloved Prince Albert.
During this Victorian Era the British empire was at the height of power and many ambitious building projects began. There was a huge demand for the finest of marbles to adorn fine buildings and the use of Ireland’s rare Connemara Marble is featured in many examples of Victorian architecture. Connemara Marble can been seen in Kensington Palace and Peterborough Cathedral to name but a few.
The marble was so famous that in the later years of Queen Victoria’s son, King Edward VII made a visit to our Marble quarry in Co. Galway during his state visit to Ireland in 1903.
