Description
Poly resin Aran Island country cottage ornament.
Genuine Connemara Marble base.
Known as “the Gemstone of Ireland” Connemara Marble is the standout Irish geological and gem material and is therefore recognized as the iconic stone of Ireland and indeed a rare gemstone. Its use in jewelry can be regarded as one of Ireland’s indigenous industries, and the hand stone quarrying of Connemara marble is a centuries-old endeavor.
Our quarry in Lissoughter Co Galway first opened in the 1820’s under the ownership of the Martin family. At it’s peak the marble was used in many of Ireland’s most important buildings. It was shipped to the UK and the USA where it adorned some of the world’s finest buildings including Kensington Palace. So famous was the quarry that it was visited by King Edward VII in 1903. Sadly due to the first world war the quarry was abandoned .
In late 1982 Stephen Walsh managed to purchase the property and it reopened on July 16th 1983. So there is quite a conversation to be had around your table with this genuine Connemara marble base.
