Connemara is the windswept and heart-stopping beautiful region that lies in the western most part of Ireland facing out over the Atlantic Ocean. The word Connemara comes from the Gaelic meaning “Inlets for the sea”. Oscar Wilde described it best when he spoke of the region possessing a “savage beauty”. Beneath this sharp and rugged landscape lies the green marble, a rare, unique, and iconic gemstone.
Dating over 900 million years old a piece of Connemara Marble is a true piece of Ireland. Known as Mother Nature’s Masterpiece this jewelry makes a fantastic collector’s piece because of its uniqueness. An inspiration for artisans across the world, each piece of Connemara Marble is as unique as a fingerprint – no two pieces are the same, each piece entirely unique to you. It is the perfect choice for anyone who would like to incorporate green tones into their jewelry wardrobe. The soft hues will suit any skin tone and the feel of smooth, cooling natural stone on your skin is said to bring serenity to the wearer.
Coming in over 40 shades of green this gemstone has a high magnesium content which is thought to aid in the absorption of calcium and magnesium. This precious marble stone of Ireland gives access to the spiritual history of Ireland and creates a sense of peace, tranquillity, restoration, and healing. Formed from sediment deposited in a shallow primal sea over 900 million years ago. The beautiful striations of rich to pale green within the marble are formed by tiny crystals of green serpentine, diopside, chlorite and rich white calcite with dolomite.
Our quarry, owned and operated by the Walsh family for over 75 years, is located in Lissoughter, County Galway. It is here where we hand lift the marble and transport it to the Walsh family workshop. For three generations the Walsh family have worked this rare green marble, and we take great pride in every timeless treasure that we bring to you. Have a look at the beautiful marble, the exquisite designs and quality craftsmanship that you will find in each piece.
We believe that, in sharing Connemara Marble’s beauty with the world it is our duty to protect that beauty. Our resident sheep would not have it any other way! Ever conscious of our carbon footprint at every level of our business, we strive to create minimum disturbance to the landscape when we hand lift the marble from our quarry. Producing ethical, natural but authentic jewelry is always in the forefront of our minds. Absolutely no chemicals or treatment are used in our Connemara Marble jewelry and gifts. Once the piece is crafted, we use natural beeswax to polish the marble and nothing more.
Connemara Marble has been designated a World Heritage Stone. One of ten stone types to be designated as such this year in 2022 our marble is now one of only 32 Heritage Stones worldwide. Known as “the Gemstone of Ireland”, Connemara Marble is the standout Irish geological material and is therefore recognized as the iconic stone of Ireland and indeed a rare gemstone. Its use in jewellery can be regarded as one of Ireland’s indigenous industries and the hand stone quarrying of Connemara marble is a centuries-old endeavour.
The motto of our family run Irish business is simply “There is no greater designer than Mother Nature herself”.
