The Rosary Maker

As many of you may know, the month of October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary.  This is primarily due to the fact that the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7.

The roots of our company stem from rosary making, and this has been a cornerstone of our business for over 75 years.

On my office wall I have a richly decorated parchment that dates from the 1960’s and is dedicated to the company, and I want to share this with you.

It’s a poem , “ The rosary maker “ that I believe was especially written for us as a token of appreciation for sending rosaries to the Irish troops serving on a UN mission in the Congo.

Here is the interesting bit of history : This Irish mission to the Congo occurred between 1960 and 1964 and was the first time that Irish troops were requested to participate in a UN peacekeeping mission.

The Congo, a former Belgian colony, became an independent Republic on 30th June 1960. Soon afterwards, the Congolese Government requested military assistance from the United Nations to maintain their territorial integrity and preventing civil war . Ireland was one of the countries requested by the United Nations to provide troops to the proposed peace mission. They accepted the request and on 19th July 1960 . This was the beginning of a four year commitment to service in the Congo where over 6000 Irishmen served between 1960 – 1964.

The mission was particularly grueling, and many Irish soldiers lost their lives in their role as peacekeepers. During times of stress and worry , the rosary is a great source of comfort, and I hope that our rosaries brought hope , courage and peace to our brave soldiers.

I hope that you will enjoy the poem, take care and my very best wishes,

Stephen

The Rosary Maker , by Liam Brophy.

With trivial fragile pieces such as these

Of woven wire and wood

To make a crown with calm accustomed ease

To man’s eyes somewhat crude

Coronal to her whose eyes can see

Destined beatitude

Fingers unknown shall fondle it, shall play

Around this simple chain

In lonely night and through laborious days,

In happiness and pain,

To make a song outlasting mortal lays

Or music’s choicest strain.

Was ever trade or toil like unto mine,

Though trivial in men’s sight?

For, while my simple wire and wood I twine

Somewhere, far off in height,

Angels keep pace with me , as they design

Companion crowns of light.

This poem is from the rosary crusade as a token of appreciation for your courtesy

and gracious generosity on the occasion of sending Rosaries to the Irish soldiers in the Congo.
