Today January 6th is also known as “Nollaig na mBan“- “Women’s Christmas” or “Little Christmas”.
There is an ancient tradition in Ireland that this is the day that the womenfolk of the household take the day off . After they had toiled and worked hard during the holiday period, this day it was the turn of the menfolk to take over the duties of the household whilst the women took a well-earned rest .
In many rural towns great groups of women would be seen heading for the pubs or restaurants and celebrate all day long. In many towns and cities groups of friends still today will get together and celebrate this tradition.
