Connemara Marble Silver Celtic Cross Pendant

The earliest surviving Celtic crosses date from the 7th century and the finest examples date from the 9th and 10th Centuries.
These magnificent crosses are carved from stone and are characterized by the ringed design we have used within this pendant. Some will argue that this ring is used to support the cross bars of the cross, whilst a more popular legend states that it was the inspiration of Saint Patrick to convert the Irish to Christianity. Using a simple cross that he held in his hand against the background of the sun to symbolize the transition of sun worship to Christianity.
Most of the crosses that we can see stood in Monasteries and as this was an era before printing the crosses were richly carved with Celtic knot work and images from Scripture. Today, we can still see these images that were used to tell the story of the bible to the congregation gathered below.
And, as the sun moved through the skies during the day it would light up another panel so a new story could be told. Can you see the Celtic knot work on the four arms of this cross?

The circles around the intersection of the cross represent unification, totality, wholeness and inclusion. We are very lucky in Ireland as we can take our inspiration from the high crosses we can still look at and touch here in Ireland – true living history.

Our Connemara Marble at the center adds authenticity and beauty to our Celtic Cross and the marriage with our Irish sterling silver is very special.

Description

Connemara Marble Silver Celtic Cross Pendant

What is Connemara Marble?

Connemara is a region situated alongside the Atlantic Ocean in the west of Ireland. The word Connemara comes from the Gaelic meaning “Inlets for the sea”. Oscar Wilde described it best when he spoke of the region possessing a “savage beauty”. Beneath this sharp and rugged landscape lies the green marble, a rare and unique gemstone.

Dating over 900 million years old Connemara Marble is Mother Nature’s Masterpiece. An inspiration for artisans across the world, each piece of Connemara Marble is as unique as a fingerprint.  It is the perfect choice for anyone who would like to incorporate green tones into their jewelry wardrobe. Soft hues will suit any skin tone and the feel of smooth, cooling natural stone on your skin brings a sense of serenity to the wearer.

40 shades of green

Coming in over 40 shades of green this gemstone has a high magnesium content which is thought to aid in the absorption of calcium and magnesium. Formed from sediment deposited in a shallow primal sea over 900 million years ago. Striations of rich to pale green within the marble are formed by tiny crystals of green serpentine, diopside, chlorite and rich white calcite with dolomite.

Our quarry, owned and operated by the Walsh family for over 80 years, is located in Lissoughter, County Galway. Here we hand lift the marble. Since 1945 the Walsh family have worked this rare green marble, and we take great pride in every timeless treasure that we bring to you.

Producing ethical, natural but authentic pieces is always in the forefront of our minds. Chemicals or treatments are NOT used in our jewelry making. Once the jewelry is crafted, we use natural beeswax to polish the marble.

World Heritage Stone

Connemara Marble is now a World Heritage Stone.  Designated as such this year in 2022 our marble is one of  32 Heritage Stones worldwide. Known as “the Gemstone of Ireland”, it is the standout Irish geological material and therefore recognized as the iconic stone of Ireland and indeed a rare gemstone.

The motto of our family run Irish business is simply “There is no greater designer than Mother Nature herself”.
