Irish Farthing Coin Pendant

The Farthing is a genuine Irish coin that was in circulation between 1926 and 1966. Often known as “ fairy money “ or “luck money” due to the low value,  a farthing would be left out on the windowsill for the wee folk ( another description of fairies) and often left in the bottom of a sewing basket for the fairies to borrow!

This is not a reproduction coin, you are buying a piece of history. Your Irish ancestors would have carried this coin. As the old saying went ” may your pockets never be empty”. Today in Ireland the tradition of giving “luck money” is still observed. This piece truly is a genuine piece of Irish history. The coin is held within Irish sterling silver and comes on an 18″ Irish sterling silver chain.

Description

The Farthing is a genuine Irish coin that was in circulation between 1926 and 1966. Its value was one quarter of an old penny.  That currency had 240 pennies on a pound so its value was 1/960 of a pound. It was taken out of circulation as it was of such a tiny value. These farthing coins are very rare and a collectors item.

The coin features the woodcock on one side. On the reverse sits the Irish harp, the word  EIRE – for Ireland, and the date that will vary from coin to coin. These old Irish coins were designed by a committee of famous Irish artists and writers. The artists include the renowned poet W B Yeats. Irish wildlife were depicted on the coins.

Often known as “ fairy money “ due to the low value –  a farthing would be left out on the windowsill for the wee folk. My own grandparents often left one in the bottom of our sewing basket for the fairies to borrow!

Long ago in Ireland a blacksmith, when shoeing a horse would charge a penny for the first nail and a farthing for every extra nail used to attach each horse shoe.

This pendant is steeped in Irish history and a truly special piece. The sterling silver gleams off the coin. Whichever side you chose to display it will look beautiful. You may also like to see our Lucky Irish Penny Leather Cord Necklace
